DISCOVER THE TRUE STORY OF JACK THE RIPPER

Uncovering Jack the Ripper's London is a different type of Jack the Ripper book that doesn't try to solve the mystery of who Jack the Ripper was, but rather it takes the reader on a breath taking journey through the events of the autumn of 1888 when Jack the Ripper prowled the night shadows of London's East End.

As such it is practically a Jack the Ripper Tour in its own right that spirits the reader back in time to meet with the people who were involved in, and who lived through, the horrors of the Jack the Ripper crimes.

Jack the Ripper's London

Beginning with a look at the district in which Jack the Ripper's crimes took place, the book goes on to build a picture of what daily life was like for the people who lived in the area. It tells of the grinding poverty that was endemic in the district, and explains how the activities of moral campaigners who were fighting to rid the area of the scourge of prostitution inadvertently forced Jack the Ripper's victims into his clutches.

Evocative and thought provoking photographs (both colour and black and white) help build a mental image of the districts of Spitalfields and Whitechapel then and now and effectively present the reader with a photographic Jack the Ripper Tour through the streets of the East End of 1888 and those same streets as they appear today.

Having set the scene, the book then introduces the reader to the police officers who were forced to pit their wits against a new type of killer that they had no experience of dealing with and who seemed to outwit them at every turn.

That done, Uncovering Jack the Ripper's London tells the tale of the murders as they occurred. It details the panic that the crimes caused in the area, charts each stage of the police investigation, as the investigating officers began to realise the nature of what they were up against, and explains how the press hijacked the killings and turned them into an international phenomenon which guaranteed record newspaper sales.

The book introduces the letter, sent to a London news agency which bore the chilling signature Jack the Ripper and which gave the killer the name by which he has come down to posterity.

As well as describing the lives, and violent deaths, of Jack the Ripper's victims, Uncovering Jack the Ripper's London also looks at how philanthropists used the murders as a means of attracting attention to the appalling social conditions in the east End of London.

So if you want to uncover the story of the world's most famous murder mystery and enjoy what is effectively an armchair Jack the Ripper Tour through the streets of Jack the Ripper's London then this is the book for you.
